Field-tested, our heavy-duty biodegradable balloons are worth every penny. They are the only ones we use! They consistently produce beautiful spheres of ice (unlike common balloons that tend to burst or freeze into unattractive shapes). Read about balloon quality here.
The balloons included can be used to make both small and large ice lanterns when used with either a Wintercraft Reusable Freezing Base (small) or (large). Just follow the directions in the Wintercraft kits to make stunning globe ice luminaries!
Two Easy-close Balloon Clips are also included in a 6 pack as well as with each 12 replacement balloons purchased in larger quantity balloon packs. Instructions, Reusable Freezing Bases, Insulating Disks are NOT included (these are in kits). Balloons are made of Natural Rubber Latex which may cause allergic reaction. Adult supervision required. Made in USA.
Note: As of November 2021 we are pleased to introduce a new balloon. Long time Wintercraft customers: read about it here. We hope you like the difference!
I love making ice lanterns. The quality of balloons from Wintercraft work. I have used the irregulars but tried the upgrade this time. No problem. My biggest problem was not guesstimating the proper time it took to freeze the water balloons just right. I ended up with 2 small lovely solid ice balls. Ha! The vagaries of this winter's temperatures make it a bit harder to predict how long it takes for a good lantern. But I did get one oncology nurse hooked on the ice luminaries. One at a time. The more the merrier.
I gotta be honest, I do not like the new balloons. They're thinner and don't hold the round globe shape. The balloon sags and creates a blob shape rather than a "crystal ball"
Mara Thanks for taking the time and sending your feedback. I'm most surprised as we've been making big ones without sag. In fact, more of a point happens at times due to the special reinforcement we've applied to the balloon. Jen's blog https://www.wintercraft.com/blogs/icewranglers-blog/the-wintercraft-balloon-2021 talks about "flipped" them to be rounder. I am assuming you are placing them on Wintercraft freezing bases as the entire system is meant to work together. It sounds like you may have received some bad ones so I'll send some replacements your way to try again. We appreciate your input.
I bought various configurations of Wintercraft products for family members for Christmas. Despite the warm weather, my brother in a Chicago suburb went on what I can only describe as a creative rant. He went from Christmas displays to Valentines Day displays to knocking major icicles off his roof and working with them. He is now conjuring up something for St Patrick’s Day (which is really hard). His pictures are wonderful. It was a Christmas present for myself, just seeing how enthusiastic he is and what gorgeous ice he created. His daughters loved helping him on some projects.
I have been making crystal balls for friends, filling the balloons quite full and putting them outside in subzero weather. The remarkable thing is there are crystal spikes that form inside the ball that look like spiny urchins. Very beautiful and interesting. Do you know how this happens? Along with the ball, I have a card that reads, "Nothing lasts forever", an inspiration to be patient during the Pandemic. Your kits are simple to use and give spectacular results.
i love learning this as a fun new hobby, wintercraft has great customer service, the ice luminary magic book offers many creative easy to follow projects
