WHAT: Lighting up a small, semi-wild space along the Minnehaha Creek with globe ice lanterns and bucket lanterns large and small.
WHEN: February 15, 2012.
SET-UP TIMING: Anytime during the day, but we will be lighting around dusk. The candles should stay lit unitl midnight or so.
OUR HOPE: That people will come to enjoy the glow of the evening.
WONDERFUL IF: people who love ice lanterns will bring one or more of their own ice lanterns to share - we will bring some extra candles.

Participants come from around the country to participate in this fun and challenging winter race. The race is on Saturday, February 4th, beginning at 10 am at Long Lake Regional Park in New Brighton, MN.

We will be offering two workshops on ice lanterns/ice glass creation and display and we will be selling Wintercraft Globe Ice Lantern Kits and Replacement Balloon packs in the craft tent.
A fun family event, the quality of snow sculptures is quite impressive, with the winning entry going on to the national championships. Last year, an "ice maze" was also part of the weekend festivities.

Winter is no time to stay inside when there are plenty of fun things to do outside. Join REI staff and our partners to try snowshoeing, go geocaching, take a naturalist-guided hike, play in the snow, discover signs of animals in winter, learn about cross country skiing, build ice lanterns, skijoring, cold weather camping, winter cycling and more! There will be snowshoes and GPS units (for geocaching) available for use. There will be a sweepstakes to win a pair of snowshoes, a large bonfire and hot cocoa to keep warm. This is a FREE event, but State Park vehicle permit fees apply ($5 per vehicle for the day or $25 for an annual permit).

Jennifer Hedberg, an ice luminary artist featured at the 2009 & 2010 City of Lakes Luminary Loppet and the 2010 John Beargrease Dog Sled Marathon, specializes in creating globe ice lanterns and ice glass. Both types of ice structures have amazing freezing patterns that are enhanced by the glow of a candle or the brilliance of the midday sun. Jennifer will demonstrate how to use this new twist on the traditional outdoor winter craft to create and display beautiful ice luminaries for outdoor as well as indoor displays.
