Wintercraft Ice Wrangler create ice wonderland for The Commons park in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota

"Midwinter Light" at The Commons Park - Downtown Minneapolis, MN

Client: Green Minneapolis

Together with a team of heavy ice lifters, we created an icy candlelit wonderland in The Commons park in downtown Minneapolis near the new US Bank Stadium. Included in the display were many towers of Finnish Glass Ice Luminaries (some were 9' tall and required a ladder to light!), a forest of Ice Glass Shards, hundreds of ice luminaries of all shapes and sizes, plus some Ice Anemones positioned at the central focal point. The event ran for 5 days and we braved some harsh conditions--sun, wind and crazy warm days! But we made it and it looked fabulous! Blog about The Commons event.

Ice Bar lit with Twirling LED lights!

Client: Private Luminary Loppet Party

I LOVE making ice bars. I designed and constructed this ice bar for a party during an ice luminary festival on February 4, 2017. One large sheet of Ice Glass is the bar top and numerous sheets of Ice Glass surround the ice bar. Twirling LED lights in red, purple and multi colors complete The-Party-is-Here effect! "This ice bar was the coolest thing I saw all night!", claimed one of thousands of revelers roaming the area during the festival. Here is the blog about the Ice Bar I built for the same event the year before.

Finnish Glass Ice Towers at the Luminary Loppet 2016

Finnish Glass Ice Towers

Client: Volunteer Ice Sculptor for The Loppet Foundation

I loved filling the 2010 Luminary Loppet's Enchanted Forest with Ice Glass and hundreds of Globe Ice Lanterns. Because all the ice artists at this event are volunteer only, other commitments often tie my hands to contribute like I did in 2010, but I try to put in a few ice luminaries each year. This year (2016), I introduced my favorite new technique that I call Finnish Glass Ice Towers - simple column ice lanterns with a funky new texture! They are a little fussy to make, but well worth the effort!

Wintercraft Ice Wrangler Wine Cooler for Private Event

Wine Cooler Extraordinaire

Client: Private Party

One of my favorite things to create is a wine cooler that is lit with LED lights to make the ice and the wine bottles sparkle with light. The flowers love the melting cold water and the wine stays invitingly cool for the guests. This Globe Ice Lanterns is an extra large size and lit with blue waterproof LED lights.

Custom "Cherry" Globe Ice Lantern for Private Event at Spoon & Stable Restaurant in the North Loop of Minneapolis

Ice Cherry Centerpieces

Client: Private Birthday Party

I created two custom Globe Ice Lantern Displays for private event at Spoon & Stable restaurant in the North Loop of Minneapolis. The ice lantern was requested to look like a cherry as the theme for the night was "Cherry on Top". The stems couldn't be made of ice as they would melt too quickly, so I created stems and inserted them in the top of a cherry-shaped Globe Ice Lanterns. Beautiful setting! The flowers arrangements on either side were created by designer Kara Karpenske.

Hanging Globe Ice Lanterns Wintercraft Custom Installation

Giant Oak filled with Hanging Globe Ice Lanterns

Client: Private Christmas Party

I was asked by a client to hand many globes in an ancient oak outside her home to create a fabulous entry effect for a holiday party near Summit Avenue in St. Paul, MN. This photo is taken at dusk and the candles are just starting to glow.

Hanging Globe at Middlemoon Creekwalk Wintercraft Community

This was the first globe ice lantern that I hung with twine macrame. I created this for the Middlemoon Creekwalk (Once a winter, Tom and I, along with neighbors, create a magical ice luminary walk along a creek to be enjoyed by all). I use that opportunity to show off experiments that I have been working on and am able to see the reaction. That way I know what works and what does not. The hanging globe has been a huge hit!

Wintercraft Ice Wrangler Wedding at the American Swedish Institute Globe Ice Lantern within a Globe Ice Lantern

Globe Ice Lantern within a Globe Ice Lantern

Client: Private Wedding

The America Swedish Institute is a lovely place for a wedding in winter. It has a stately stone wall at its entrance that is just perfect to hold a series of ice lanterns to welcome guests. Typically, the globe ice lanterns I make are extra thick and are filled with lines to reflect the light, but at the time of this wedding, we were in a little bit of a warm spell. So, I had to get a little creative given that the weather was too warm to freeze a dozen large, thick ice lanterns. The temperature would freeze a small ice lantern beautifully and would freeze a thinner shell on large globe ice lanterns, so I decided to marry the two--one inside the other. It worked perfectly and the client was thrilled!

Wintercraft Ice Wall at Ice Castle in New Hampshire

"Stained Ice Wall" and other ice luminary installations

Client: Ice Castles

For a few years now, the people at Ice Castles have asked Wintercraft to add a little icy magic to their elaborate ice creation. This photo shows an ice wall that I created in the New Hampshire Castle. It is made with huge tubes of ice that have been crosscut to show off the freezing pattern inside. Lit from behind, it is fabulous and a visitor favorite!

Outside Globe Ice Lantern display for the Joynoelle Fashion Show at the Grand Restaurant in Minneapolis, MN

Globe Ice Lantern Outdoor Arrangement

Client: Joynoelle Bridal Fashion Show at the Grand Restaurant

With no snow to be found and a "winterized" front entrance of the restaurant, I improvised by wrapping white string lights with light brown burlap and wound 20 globe ice lanterns of various sizes through the branches of a large tree limb found behind the restaurant! Private Wintercraft Custom Installation

Outdoor Globe Ice Lantern Installation

Client: Me!

This was a photo shoot I set up with photographer Paul Umbarger to capture images for marketing material. A neighbor kindly allowed me to borrow their amazing round rock wall that was beautifully covered with a thick blanket of snow. Perfect! The above image is now somewhat famous as it has been used on the packaging for our Wintercraft kits for years!

Under the Bridge Ice Luminary Tower at the City of Lakes Luminary Loppet 2009, Minneapolis, Minnesota

Client: Volunteer Ice Sculptor for The Loppet Foundation

This globe ice lantern sat on top of a large tower of ice shapes glued together with water and cold weather and was lit from top to bottom with candles. The textured effect of this globe is what I call "Sun Etched" because the globe was exposed to sun and then allowed to refreeze. Photo by Bruce Challgren

Outdoor Ice Luminary Installation

Client: Midwest Home

Midwest Home asked me to create a winter wonderland for an issue of their magazine, and gave me a choice of location. My first choice was at a neighbors home who is reknowned for his amazing gardens. Bus loads of people from far and wide came to walk through his gardens and listen to hime tell his secrets for success with lilies and shade plants. When he said yes, I knew it was going to be amazing! Midwest Home gave me free reign to do whatever I wanted, so of course I went crazy. Too many pic to show here, but check this out. This photo and many more were taken by Martha Shull Archer.
